Yet Another Good Quote

February 20th, 2009 · No Comments

From one of my favorite people for quotes, Mark Twain

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover

More Good Quotes

February 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments

As I prepare for another possible big change in my life and being the lover of quotes that I am, I found it very fitting to find these at my chiropractor’s office on a recent visit.

I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning to sail my ship. - Louisa May Alcott

Change is the law of life - JFK

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing - Helen Keller

And after a little research, I found out there was more to the Helen Keller quote than the above.

To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

Good stuff!

Our Family Motto

February 11th, 2009 · No Comments

The previous post reminded me of a quote we saw when visiting the Cleveland Botanical Garden last year. I’ve been meaning to post this for quite some time, but as you can see, I haven’t spent much time posting in the past year. Anyways, as unschoolers, this is probably the quote that best describes how we view education. Actually, it’s a pretty good summation of how we live our lives.

Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets, and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education.
– Horticulturist Luther Burbank

A Mother’s Lament

February 11th, 2009 · No Comments

I received the following from my wife earlier today. Very poetic (in an odd sort of way).

This is the cruelest time of year for mothers…Late spring is green and fresh, summer warm and wonderful with possibilities, and then there’s autumn—aahhh autumn, even late fall and early winter the cold is a welcome change and the snowfall play, but, late winter/early spring with children weary of being locked inside during the cold, wet days are anxious to get outside as the snow melts and the sun beams down, warm air whispering in their cold ears. And who can blame them for harkening to spring’s seductive song??, but, alas! the mud!! Oh, *groan* the mud….

I’m still here.

January 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

For those few who still visit my site every so often, you may have noticed the site was down for a couple days. The hard drive in my server decided to start making some very interesting noises and so I shut the server down while waiting for the new drive to arrive. Well, as of this morning, the system was cloned to the new drive and all is well.

What are you thinking?

I expected some day in the future we would be able to interface with computers with only our thoughts, but I had no idea it was already developed this far.

Settling In

October 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Well, it’s been a little over a week and now that the initial shock of going from a large corporation (3000+ employees) to a small company (less than 150) is over, I’m happy to report I’m finally settling in. There’s a lot of work to be done to get the IT department up to the standard expected by clients, but I have a feeling I’ll enjoy the progression. I really look forward to it becoming my IT department. No matter what happens, good or bad, it will be my responsibilty, and that is something I not only find challenging, but I’m looking forward to the daily challenges and rewards (or pitfalls) that come with it.

More to come later.

Time for a change

October 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally happened… I’m moving on to bigger and better things. Today I officially resigned from my current place of employment and have accepted a position at a small company in the same industry. One of the big changes is the company is about 1.5 hours south of where I live, so I’ll be moving my family. It felt good to finally get this done as it’s been in the works for several months.

The biggest part of this change though is I’ll be moving into a management position. In fact, I’ll be taking over an entire IT department. I really look forward to the new challenges I’ll be presented with.
